On August 31 of 2023, the IBGE published in the Official Gazette information relative to the resident population in the 26 States, 5,568 municipalities, as well as the Federal District and the Island District of Fernando de Noronha, pursuant to the laws in effect for the calculation of the revenue sharing funds provided for in Paragraph One of one of Art. 161 of the Federal Constitution.

The total of populations annually released by the IBGE take into consideration the situation of the Brazilian Political-Administrative Division relative to the publishing year. The dynamics of the Brazilian Political-Administrative Division often causes updates in territorial borders, in the scope of the agreement the IBGE has with state bodies for the consolidation of borders and application of new laws that update municipal borders.

Due to the need for disseminating the total number of populations in the year of reference, the 2022 Population Census data, collected in the period from August 1, 2022 to July 7, 2023 (second count), were made compatible with the changes of territorial borders occurred between August 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023.

Data released in the Official Gazette result, thus, from the populations of the 2022 Census (date of reference of August 1, 2022), with updates of territorial borders which were reported to the IBGE from August 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023, in the scope of the cooperation agreements kept with state bodies in order to consolidate the borders.

Description

The IBGE has published state and municipal population estimates since 1975. From 1992 on, it started publishing them in the Official Gazette, in compliance with Art. 102 of Law No. 8,443, of July sixteen, 1992, for the purposes provided for in Item VI of Art. 1st of the aforementioned law. In 2013, Complementary Law No. 143, of July 17, 2013 was published, establishing that the competent entity of the federal executive power should publish in the Official Gazette, up to August 31st of each year, the list of Municipal Populations, and upt to December 31st, the list of State and Federal District Populations. Municipal Populations, one should note, are the most important data used by the cabe destacar, são o insumo mais importante utilizado pelo Brazilian Court of Audit - TCU for the distribution of the State and Federal District Revenue Sharing Fund - FPE and of the Municipal Revenue Sharing Fund - FPM.

In Census years, the IBGE publishes data on the enumerated population. For 2023, in compliance with Art. 102 of Law No. 8,443, of July 16,1992, the populations of the 2022 Population Census were published in the Official Gazette, on August 31, 2023, with updates of territorial borders that were reported to the IBGE between August 1, 2022 and April 30, 2023, within the scope of technical cooperation agreements with state bodies, aimed at consolidating the borders.

  • Calendar error in the release of the List of Municipal Populations to be published in the Official Gazette in 2023

    Published date: 05/09/2023

    Description:
    The IBGE identified an error for not complying with the scheduled release date, due to the need for re-scheduling deadlines. The release date was postponed from August 30 to August 31 of 2023, and the release time changed from 10 am to 9 am.

    Actions: The Note released on July 21 of 2023 was updated on August 16 and 28 of 2023.
