Systems of Vital Statistics in Brazil: advances, perspectives and challenges
About - 2019 - Preliminary Results
The Vital Statistics Survey gathers information on birth, marriage, death and still birth records informed by the Civil Registry Offices of Natural Persons, as well as on the divorces declared by the Family Courts, Courts, Civil Courts and Notary Offices.
In order to meet the demands of the Brazilian society, which is currently undergoing serious public health crisis, resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, with the support of the SEADE/SP Foundation, is making efforts to put out, in a preliminary way, the results of the statistics of the records of deaths occurred in the country, referring to the year 2019.
With regard to the information on death records, the statistics produced have as their data collection unit the the Civil Registry Offices of Natural Persons (RCPN), which have a legal obligation to provide the requested data (Law No. 6015/1973) . These data have been collected by the IBGE since 1974.
For Civil Registry Offices of Natural Persons (RCPN), Federal Law No. 6,015, of December 31, 1973, in art. 49, determines that civil registry officers send to IBGE within the first eight days of the months of January, April, July and October of each year, the records of births, deaths and marriages occurred in the previous quarter.
Therefore, the death data presented here occurred and were recorded in the year 2019, excluding those that occurred in 2019 and were recorded in the first quarter of 2020.
