PNAD - National Household Sample Survey

About - Internet Access and Television and Possession of Mobile Telephone for Personal Use

Aiming at improving the knowledge on the use of Information and Communication Technologies – ICT in Brazil, the National Household Sample Survey – PNAD has been collecting since 2013 a more extensive set of data to address the main aspects related to the access of ICT in households and to its individual use. This investigation is focused on the broadband Internet, as well as on the reception of different types of TV signals, which are important information to guide the transition from analogic TVs to digital TVs. Like the previous editions, key ICT indicators approved in the World Summit on the Information Society – WSIS, held in Geneva in 2005, were taken as references, as well as the latest international improvements.

In this publication, the IBGE unveils the main results of this survey, providing information on the different types of electronic devices used to access the Internet (microcomputers, mobile telephones, tablets and others). It also includes information on households with tablets, as well as on those in which the dwellers access the Internet through broadband connection, either with fixed technologies (DSL, cable TVs, optical fiber, satellite and radio) or mobile (3G and 4G), and on those with flat screen TVs, pay TVs, TVs receiving digital signals of broadcast TV and satellite dishes. The profiles of the Internet users and of the persons using mobile telephones for personal use are detailed according to characteristics like sex, age, schooling level, per capita monthly household earnings, employment type and economic activity. The analysis of the results encompasses Brazil, Major Regions and Federation Units and highlights the most relevant aspects of the investigation, exemplified with tables and graphs.

The publication also brings technical notes on the survey, including methodological issues that allow to know the main aspects of its historical evolution and the sampling plan, as well as explanation on the key indicators used for international data comparability. In addition, a glossary including the essential concepts to understand the results can be found at the end of the publication. The whole set of information is also available at the IBGE web portal, as well as the micro data of the survey. The tables of results for Brazil, Major Regions, Federation Units and nine Metropolitan Areas and the coefficients of variation associated with the estimates are also available.

The results now released are an important source of statistics on the use of ICT by persons, supporting the national planning and the public policies aimed at the technological development of Brazil.

Description

The National Household Sample Survey - PNAD, carried out annually, was finished in 2016, with the release of information for 2015. Planned to produce results for Brazil, Major Regions, Federation Units and nine Metropolitan Regions (Belém, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre), it surveyed, on an ongoing basis, general characteristics of the population, education, labor, income and housing, and, according to the information needs for the country, having the household as its unit of survey. The PNAD was replaced, with updated methodology, with the Continuous National Household Sample Survey - Continuous PNAD, which provides a more comprehensive territorial coverage and provides quarterly short-term information on the workforce nationwide.

The PNAD started in the second quarter of 1967, and its results were presented quarterly until the first quarter of 1970. From 1971 on, the survey has become annual, being carried out in the last quarter, being interrupted in the years of Population Censuses. In 1974-1975, a special survey, named National Study on Household Expenditure - ENDEF, was conducted and, as it was being carried out, the basic PNAD survey was suspended. In 1994, for exceptional reasons, the survey was not conducted. Over time, PNAD underwent methodological updates, some restricted to the sampling plan, and others related to the comprehensiveness and the conceptualizations of the surveyed aspects, in line with international recommendations.

During the 49 years of its existence, PNAD has been an important instrument for the formulation, validation and evaluation of policies targeted to the socioeconomic development of the population and the improvement of the living conditions in the country.
