Micro and Small Commercial and Service Companies in Brazil | 2001

Aiming at contributing to the increase of the statistical information availability about micro and small companies in operation in the country, the IBGE has investigated this segment of trade and provision of services, which constitute the main economic sectors as for the relative participation of micro and small businesses.  

The current publication includes results of the special survey carried out from the Annual Survey of Trade and Annual Survey of Services databases, relative to 2001, and presents information on personnel employed, wages, value added, revenue and expenditure of micro and small commercial and service companies, disaggregated by level of the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE and by Major Region and Federation Unit. The results are presented with analyses about the behavior of birth and mortality rates in this segment, n the period 1998-2000, the cost structure of companies, among other national and regional indicators. It includes technical notes about the classification criteria adopted for defining the size of the comaonies, the main aspects of the special tabulation of surveys considering the purposes of this study, and a glossary with concepts of the terminology sdopted. It also brings, attached, the detailed structure of CNAE regarding the selected sectors.

The statistics relreased herein highlight the importance of micro and small commercial and service enterprises in the generation of jobs and income, thus defining the necessary tools to foster their activities.

In order to increase the availability of statistical information of micro and small companies in operation in Brazil, the IBGE has investigated the profile of this segment that is related to both trade and service rendering activities, the main economic sectors as for the relative participation of micro and small businesses.  

The survey presents information about employed persons, salaries paid, value added, revenue and expenditure of micro and small commercial and service companies, disaggregated by level of the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE and by Major Region and Federation Unit. The results are presented with analyses about the behavior of birth and mortality rates in this segment, the cost structure in companies, among other national and regional indicators.
