IBGE will release complete review of time series of chicken slaughter - Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter

The Coordination of Agricultural Statistics detected errors in the records of weight of chicken carcasses in the entire time series of the Quarterly Survey of Animal Slaughter, started in 1997. After consulting informants through the Computer-Aided Telephone Interview Center (CETAC), in on-site visits and in a technical discussion with Embrapa Swine and Poultry, the IBGE confirmed that most informants of the survey have been informing the live weight of animals rather than the carcass weight and that most informants do not have appropriate records of carcass weight to provide, but just the live weight. Therefore, the IBGE studied the complete time series of the survey and included new variables to support the questionnaire applied since 2019, like the live weight, in addition to the carcass weight already informed, as well as split the data by slaughtered category (spring chicken, chicken and cock). Supported by Embrapa Swine and Poultry, the IBGE managed to detect and amend the errors. The errors were amended based on the individual time series of the establishments, applying, in most cases, a mathematical model to transform live weights into carcass weights, studied and released in a technical notice by Embrapa on the following link: https://www.infoteca.cnptia.embrapa.br/infoteca/bitstream/doc/1135271/1/final9504.pdf.

From the fourth quarter of 2022 onwards, the IBGE system was changed to automatically transform live weights into carcass weights, as well as it implemented new edits for data entry and reports.

The release of the revised time series on SIDRA (1997 to 2022) is scheduled for February 10, 2023, the release date of the First Results of the Quarterly Surveys of Livestock for the fourth quarter of 2022.
