Condolence Note – Charles Curt Mueller


It is with deep sorrow that the IBGE learned of the loss of professor Charles Curt Mueller (88 years old), president of the Institute from 1988 to 1990. The funeral took place on February 1st, Wednesday, in Brasília (DF).


Mr. Mueller was born in Curitiba (PR), on November 15 of 1934. With a Major in Economics from the School of Economics and Business Administration, of the University of São Paulo (1956-1959), he had a Master's (1969-1971) and Doctoral degree (1971-1974) in Economics from the Vanderbilt University, in the United Sates; he had a postdoctoral degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Manchester, England (1980-1981), and in Natural Resource Economics from the University of Illinois, in the United Sates (1992-1993).


In the IBGE, he was Director of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Geography  (1985-1987) and Coordinator of Special Projects (1987-1988). As President (1988-1990), he continued the Administrative Reform, starting an unprecedent Strategic Planning with the purpose of modernizing the Institute's works.


Mr. Mueller played a significant role in some of the major universities of Brazil: in the Federal University of Paraná, as visiting professor, from 1961 to 1971; in the University of Brasília, as visiting professor, from 1972 to 1990, and as full professor, from 1990 to 2004, whe he retired.
