An estimate of the Potential of Air Pollution by Industry
This work aims at estimating the potential of air pollution by industries in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The methodology adopted was the World Bank´s Industrial Pollution Projection System - IPPS, which uses factors of intensity of the emission of air pollutants and the number of persons employed in industrial activities. The IPPS methodology is suitable for quick studies and diagnoses of the industrial environmental situation, mainly where data to diagnose pollution is missing. The study pinpoints the municipalities of greater pollution potential, both by type of industry and by air pollutants emitted. Some comparisons between the estimates of potential emission of pollutants and FEEMA´s classification of polluter potential, and DATASUS´data on respiratory diseases (MS, 2003a) have been carried out to adjust the IPPS methodology to the Brazilian reality. The comparison with FEEMA´s polluter potential matched fairly well, while that with DATASUS´ data could not establish any association between respiratory diseases and industrial polluter potential in the municipalities.
