The Geography of Brazil
Description
The series The Geography of Brazil presents a comprehensive study of the Brazilian macro-regions, with a highlight to the spatial interactions that have guaranteed consistency to each macro-regional section approached. Throughout the series, one can observe the changes that have characterized the territory socio-spatial dynamics. At the same time, the selection of topics for this study evidences the adequacy of surveys to new scenario in the field of geographic studies, both in Brazil and in the world. The series has been produced by the IBGE since the 1950’s, having been released in a single volume in 1960, encompassing the macro-regions identified at the time. The succeeding editions produced studies about the country for the decades of 1960, 1970 and 1980, with a gap in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2016, the IBGE resumed the discussion on a new edition of the study by releasing a volume entitled Brazil – a geographic and environmental view in the beginning of the 21st century.
About the publication - Geography of Brazil - 1980's
Geography of Brazil, released in 1989, was intended to continue with the series that had great relevance in the volumes published in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The main goal of this edition was to produce updated knowledge not only about changes in the regional space, but also about the potentialities and framework of such space, contributing to provide an overview of the regional organization of Brazil.
Following the same structure from the previous editions, the 1980’s version of Geography of Brazil presents the Major Regions or Macroregions that existed at that time. This publication has a different approach from the previous ones as its central concern is to focus on the regional identity, besides providing a thematic analysis as in the previous versions.
Following this line of thought, the introduction presented the integration of the Region into the national context, and the final section focused on the regional space framework, including the aspects addressed in the first part and an analysis of what the Region represents in the current spatial organization of the country.
Since the volume was designed between 1986 and 1987 and the state of Tocantins was created in 1988, with the Constitution, and established in 1989, that state is not represented individually, but its spatial organization can be studied as “North of Goiás” in the section related to the regional space framework. Three volumes related to the North, Central West and South were produced. They are all available in digital version.
