Graminaceous plants of the Cerrado

Description

Graminaceous plants are part of one of the most diverse and widely distributed botanic families. Besides having ecological relevance, these plants are specially important for human beings due to their useful species, for example, as fundamental cereals for human and animal feeding; in the case of sugarcane, an important source of biofuels; and of bamboos, used in civil construction. Due to the ecological and economic relevance of graminaceous plants, studies about them have received attention from different fields in science: ranging from basic Botany and Ecology to applied sciences such as Agronomy, Zootechnics and Environmental Engineering. In Brazil, graminaceous plants are among the 10 families with the biggest number of known species and are present in all biomes. In the Cerrado, mainly, they stand out in field and savannah formations, where they make up most of the herbaceous strata in several ecosystems. They are also present in underwood areas and in bamboos .

The book Graminaceous Plants in the Cerrado, a posthumous edition of the work by Tarciso de Sousa Filgueiras, presents a monumental compilation of a great variety of information on the several different types of gramineous plants found in this biome. With wide bibliographical coverage, the work presents a comprehensive introduction about his family, his relevance and his studies, besides botanic Keys and descriptions with more than 500 species. Being, at the same time, valuable technical material and a tribute to its creator, one of the main experts on the topic, the book is an indispensable reference for anyone who is interested in Agrostology and in the Cerrado in general.
