Description
The collection Atlas of Literary Representations of the Brazilian Major Regions has the objective of identifying and representing, by means of maps at different scales, satellite photos and images, the Brazilian regions that have been a distinguishing element in the plot of some of the major works of national literature, in a type of mapping where identity is the key element for the individualization of the different territory segments that form the national scenario. By providing society with this Atlas, the IBGE is aligned with the latest trends in the geographic studies and in Human Sciences in general, both aimed at the incorporation of a cultural dimension to the agenda of surveys on population and territory dynamics.
About the publication - Brazilian Sertões II - Volume 3
The collection Atlas of Literary Representations of the Brazilian Regions has the objective of identifying and representing, by means of maps at different scales, photos and satellite images, the Brazilian regions that have become a distinguishing element in the plot of some of the major works of national literature, building, this way, a type of mapping in which identity is the central element for the individualization of the several territory segments that form the national scenario.
Atlas of Literary Representations of the Brazilian Regions - volume 3 (2016) - Brazilian Sertões II
After the release of Southern Brazil and Brazilian Sertões I, respectively, in 2006 and 2009, the IBGE presents the third volume of the collection, Brazilian Sertões II, which gathers the territorial subdivisions of Sertões do Oeste and Sertões de Passagem, following the same proposal as in the previous editions, that is, to identify areas that were formed in the process of territory occupation and that, due to its peculiarities, have marked our history, stimulating the rise of cultural manifestations of great relevance in the national imaginary. The construction of regional boundaries presented in the current volume was based on classic publications by geographers, historians, sociologists, anthropologists and other scholars dealing with the Brazilian social and spatial dynamics, but also considering recent academic productions, resulting in a scenario of physical and qualitative expansion of the university environment and of graduate systems, which allow the emergence of new analyses and new approaches to already established knowledge.
Keeping the methodological proposal of the project, all the process of perception of the regions is improved with the incorporation of national novels. For Brazilian Sertões II, passages were selected from works by Bernardo Élis, Mário Palmério, Agripa Vasconcelos, Visconde de Taunay, Bernardo Guimarães, Camilo Chaves, Hernani Donato, Moura Lima, Rogério de Camargo, Brígido Ibanhes, Maria José Silveira, Marcos Faustino, among many others who brilliantly immortalized memorable characters, social conflicts and historical processes that marked the Brazilian social and spatial development . The publication of this new volume proves IBGE's commitment in the portrayal of the most varied forms of manifestation by the Brazilian society and territory.
