Objetivo
As projeções populacionais fornecem estimativas e indicadores demográficos prospectivos e são a principal fonte de informação populacional disponível para o período intercensitário. A projeção populacional pode ser utilizada no planejamento e monitoramento de políticas e ações nos setores público e privado. Além disso, as populações projetadas são utilizadas no cálculo de diversos indicadores socioeconômicos e demográficos e na expansão de todas as pesquisas domiciliares por amostragem feitas pelo IBGE. Adicionalmente, são a base para o cálculo das estimativas das populações dos municípios.

Metodologia

Para projetar as populações do Brasil e das Unidades da Federação foi utilizado o método das componentes demográficas, o qual incorpora as informações sobre as tendências observadas da mortalidade, da fecundidade e da migração em nível nacional e regional. Neste método, interagem as variáveis demográficas seguindo as coortes de pessoas ao longo do tempo, expostas às leis de fecundidade, mortalidade e migração. Histórico

O IBGE disponibiliza desde 2000 projeções populacionais para o Brasil, realizada por métodos demográficos. As projeções populacionais passam por revisões periódicas após a realização de Censo Demográfico ou de Contagem Populacional, ou na constatação de mudança nas tendências previstas para o comportamento de algum dos componentes da dinâmica demográfica: mortalidade, fecundidade ou migração. A última projeção divulgada ocorreu em 2013 e cobre os períodos de 2000-2060, para o Brasil, e 2000-2030, para as Unidades da Federação. Embora as revisões anteriores, publicadas em 2008, 2004 e 2000, estejam disponíveis para consulta, recomenda-se o uso da revisão de Projeção de População mais recente uma vez que, a cada revisão, são incorporadas informações mais atualizadas sobre os componentes e/ou mudanças metodológicas no cálculo da projeção.

Description

Population Projections play a fundamental role in the calculation of socio-demographic indicators, supplying informed public policies and their respective follow-up monitoring. They can also serve as a basis for private sectors' planning strategies. Besides, the population projections are also used for the expansion of all household sample surveys carried out by the IBGE and the calculation of either the per capita national or regional Gross Domestic Product - GDP. They also result in municipal estimates of population which, altogether, constitute the main parameter of revenue distribution carried out by the Federal Court of Audit - TCU, in the Revenue Sharing Fund of the States and Federal District - FPE and in the Municipal Revenue Sharing Fund - FPM.

The calculation of the population projections for the total of the country, by sex and age, using the Methods of the Demographic Components, started in 1973. From 1975 on, the IBGE also became in charge of the disclosure of the population amounts of the Federation Units and and population estimates of the municipalities in the intercensal periods, using mathematical methods. In 2013, the Method of the Demographic Components for the projections by sex and age was implemented for the Federation Units, coupled with the results of the 2010 Population Census and the latest data on the components of population growth (mortality, fertility and migration).

The Population Projections of Brazil and Federation Units are made based on information on the demographic components from the population censuses, household sample surveys and administrative records of births and deaths investigated by the IBGE.

Given the changes in the population dynamics, the projections are continuously monitored and undergo regular revisions, both to add new information, when the changes in the hypotheses raised for the components are detected, and to update the calculation methodology. Those improvements are made clear in the respective methodological reports.

  • Correction of a Note of the spreadsheets with the populations estimated by age in the 2018 Projections

    Description:
    An error was identified in a Note of the spreadsheets with the populations projected by age in the 2018 Projections. The note making reference to methodology adopted in the 2013 Projection was used by mistake. No data have been modified.

    Actions: The incorrect note was removed from the spreadsheets and the files, replaced.
