National Household Sample Survey 2009 - Supplements

Characteristics of victimization and access to justice in Brazil

In 2009, the National Household Sample Survey - PNAD - assessed, as supplements, Food security and Victimization and Justice, of which results are organized in different publications.

With this release, IBGE brings to public the information relative to the Victimization and Justice survey, the result of an initiative in partnership with the National Council of Justice - CNJ, which focused on aspects relative to Justice. This survey is an update of the parameters for the analysis and comprehension of these phenomena in the national level, and of the way they affect Brazilian population. The previous analysis was conducted when the Political-Social Participation supplement was released by PNAD in 1988.

The results are made public for Brazil, Major Regions and Federation Units. The survey on victimization analyzed the socioeconomic profile for the victims of robbery, theft, assault and theft or robbery attempts, including the relevant characteristics of these crimes and some behavior questions relative to them, such as feeling of safety and atitudes to prevent violence. With respect to justice, types of conflicts and how people tried to solve them, by means of Justice or alternative methods, were analyzed in the last five years. The analysis of the results, illustrated by tables and graphs, highlights the most relevant aspects of the presented indicators.

The publication also includes a brief description of the survey, the sample plan and a glossary with the terms and concepts considered relevant for the comprehension of the results. The enclosed CD-ROM reproduces the printed volume and contains aditional tables about all the surveyed topics in this supplementary edition, a set of tables by Metropolitan Region, as well as the results obtained in 1988, allowing for comparison.

That information is available at IBGE website on the Internet, where PNAD microdata can also be found, facilitating the exploration of its data base under different perspectives.
