Access and Use of Health Services - 2003

This publication presents selected information about the health characteristics of the Brazilian population, as a supplement to the National Household Sample Survey - PNAD 2003, conducted through a partnership between IBGE and the Ministry of Health.

It presents a profile of demands in the Brazilian health field, based on reports about person’s self-evaluation of health conditions, restriction to everyday activities and chronic diseases informed, as well as the access and use of services, type of coverage of healthcare plans and assistance received by SUS - Brazilian Unified Health System. The publication also includes and analysis of the results presented, the concepts of characteristics investigated and the survey sampling plan.

The CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication presents, besides information in the printed volume, the results of this supplementary topic for major Regions, Federation Units, selected Metropolitan Areas and the Federal District, as well as the sampling plan of 2003, which was remade so as to include the review of population prospects released in 2004.

More detailed information obtained by the survey is available as microdata, on a separate CD-ROM.

This publication is an important source of information for the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of health policies, providing material for the development of surveys in the field of Public Health Assistance.
