Demographic Trends

Demographic Trends: an analysis of indigenous populations based on sample results of Demographic Censuses 1991 and 2000

It presents a comparative analysis of the self-declared indigenous population in the items related to Color or Race in the of Demographic Censuses 1991 and 2000 sample questionnaires. The objective is not only to provide a reference to the inclusion of indians in the social and demographic statistics and to define public policies aimed at their life conditions, but also to promote the conduction of better census surveys about this population group.

Although the language and the ethnicity of Indians are not investigated in the national censuses, the data presented in this study deal with the main characteristics of self-declared indians in this category – spatial distribution over the territory; sex and age; religion; mental or physical disability; marriage rates; aspects of the demographic dynamics, such as migration, fertility and child mortality; labor and income; families and households. The objective of the study is to reveal the profile of indigenous persons. The analyses, which are made by IBGE technicians and specialists from other institutions, highlight the significant indigenous population growth and try to find a way to explain the determining factors of the increment observed in the period.

This group of information is also available in the CDROM which comes enclosed with the publication.

Methodological information about the survey can also be found in the publication Methodology of Demographic Census 2000 , in the Methodological Reports Series.

This publication is a valuable source of reference for researchers of indigenous population in Brazil .
