Food Security 2004/2009
In 2009, the National Household sample Survey – PNAD – investigated, as a supplementary survey, the topics Food Security and Victimization and Justice, the results of which are organized as different publications.
With this release, IBGE presents information relative to Food Security, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Social Development and Combat to Hunger. As in 2004, at the time of the first diagnosis resulting from this same partnership, statistics now show the status of food security in Brazilian households, having as a methodological reference the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale – EBIA, that allows the identification and classification of households according to levels of seriousness of this phenomenon among families in the country, and makes it possible to estimate the magnitude of food security in these housing units.
The results presented herein refer to Brazil, its Major Regions and Federation Units, and encompass the two- year-existence of this supplement, including characteristics such as: household status; age composition of the housing unit by existence or non-existence of residents under 18 years of age; number of residents of the household; their sex, color or race and level of schooling; and household income per capita, among other pieces of information. The analysis of results, illustrated by tables and graphs highlights the most relevant aspects of the indicators presented.
The publication includes the survey sampling plan, information about studies conducted for the improvement of the method originally conceived by the United States Department of Agriculture - USDA) and its adequacy and validation in Brazil. It also presents a detailed description of the procedures relative to the development of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale – EBIA – used in 2004, as well as the updates effected later in order to adjust it to the current nutritional scenario in Brazil. In the comparative tables, the data of 2004 are based on this update. A glossary at the end of the publication records the concepts and terms considered essential to the understanding of results. The CD-ROM that comes enclosed with the publication reproduces the printed volume and brings complementary regional tables, the variation coefficients presented in the tables of results and tables with the EBIA used in 2004.
These data are available on the IBGE web site. On the same source there are PNAD microdata, applied to facilitate the exploration of the survey database from different approaches.
