Population Prospects of Brazil by sex and age: 1980-2050 - Review 2008
The population estimates, besides its fundamental importance for the calculation of sociodemographic and economic indicators, in the period between censuses, help Ministries and State and Municipal Secretariats in the formulation, implementation and future evaluation of their respective programs and, mainly, of the activities included in their social policies. These estimates are also the main parameter for the distribution by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), of shares relative to the State and Municipal Allocation Fund.
Willing to provide total clearness to society and users of this information, IBGE includes in this publication, the results and methodology employed in the System of Population Prospects and Estimates of Brazil, in its review 2008. The updating applied incorporates information about the trend recorded regarding mortality, fertility and migration in national level, in the period from 1980 to 2050, using the Method of Demographic Components. The analysis of the results, illustrated greatly with tables and graphics, highlights the most relevant transformation observed in the demographic indicators implicit in this projection, mainly in relation to the accelerated process of population aging, result of the combined effect of reduction of the levels of fertility and mortality and of the increase of life expectancy, since the mid-eighties.
Additionally, the publication includes the study Censuses surveys: levels and historical pattern of population underenumeration, with the main and unpublished results of an historical evaluation of the population censuses and population counting, conducted from 1980 to 2007. This study allows evaluate and estimate, for each year, the quality of the coverage of the conducted census operations in Brazil in this period.
The publication includes, also comparative tables, with population prospects of the United Nations for selected countries, as well as a glossary with the conceptualization of the terminology. The CD-ROM enclosed contains, besides information of the printed volume, other international indicators.
