Evaluation of the nutritional status of 9th graders

With this publication, IBGE releases the results for the National Survey of School Health, which was conducted in 2009 with 9th graders of elementary school in Brazilian capitals and in the Federal District, through a partnership with the Ministry of Health. The survey was conducted in accordance with the norms and directives applied at national and international level for surveys involving human subjects, mainly teenagers. It had the objective of knowing and measuring the different factors of risk and protection to health in this group, using as a reference for sample selection a registry with the public and private schools listed in the School Census 2007, of the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira, of the Ministry of Education – INEP/MEC.As a sequence to the first release of this survey, which presented a profile of the status of students with reference to the prevalence of risk and life protection factors, mainly those related to chronic non-communicable diseases, this second publication brings an analysis of the nutritional status of this group, based on the Body Mass Index – BMI. Besides anthropometric measures, the survey evaluation also considered the perception and attitude of these teenagers concerning the weight of their bodies as possible a factor of life risk or protection.
This survey presents methodological procedures which its elaboration, with highlight to the criteria related to the boundaries of the target population, the sampling plan and the technical and ethical aspects involved in data collection, a group of result tables and commentaries about the topic. The publication also presents a glossary with terms and concepts considered essential to the understanding of results.
The National Survey of School Health certainly increases knowledge about the health characteristics of the Brazilian teenage population, thus providing executive and legislative powers, health councils and other agents related to the sector with reliable information, so as to guide and evaluate public policies directed to this important population group.
