The study, which results from a partnership between IBGE and the Ministry of Culture, aims at systematizing information related to the field of cultural activities in the country, based on statistics of production (supply) of goods and services, household and government expenditure (demand), and characteristics of manpower in this sector (employment). In order to do so, data of seven databases produced by the institution, having as 2003 as the year of reference, have been used: Central Register of Enterprises, Annual Survey of Industry – Enterprise, Annual Survey of Trade, Annual Survey of Services, Consumer Expenditure Survey, Economic Statistics of Public Administration and National Household Sample Survey.

This publication represents the initial mark of a process of organization and construction of an integrated system of statistical information and culture indicators. It presents: methodological aspects relative to the description and classification of economic activities directly or indirectly related to culture and in accordance with the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE 1.0 and a brief description of surveys used as sources. It also brings an analysis of the indicators selected for the characterization of this production sector, not only in terms of economic aspects of production, but also in terms of the expenditure of Brazilian families with the acquisition of these products and the budget expenses of the government with administration, operation and support to the organization of culture in the country, and also in relation to the socioeconomic profile of the population employed in culture activities. The material includes a glossary with relevant concepts to the understanding of the results.
