Population Count 1996

Definitions of the Characteristics Investigated in Population Count 1996

Population

The population is formed by resident household members, that is, persons whose usual place of residence was the surveyed housing unit, regardless of their presence or absence on the date of reference. Regular residents of the housing unit who were absent on the date of reference were enumerated when their period of absence did not exceed 12 months from the aforementioned date.

This population, formed by present-in-are and absentee residents, corresponds to the Resident Population or De jure Population.

The data for the total population refer to resident persons in private housing units – permanent and improvised ones – and in collective housing units.

Urban/Rural Status

According its location, a housing unit can be urban or rural, as defined by the municipal law in effect on August 1996. The urban status encompasses persons and housing units enumerated in urbanized or non-urbanized areas, corresponding to cities (municipal headquarters), villages (district headquarters) or isolated urban areas. The rural status encompasses the population and households enumerated in all the area located outside the urban boundaries, including rural agglomerated areas of urban extension, villages and other centers.

Housing Units

A housing unit is a structurally-independent unit formed by one or more rooms, with a private entrance. By extension, buildings being constructed, vessels, vehicles, tents, stalls, caves and other places being used as a residence on the date of reference of the survey, were also considered housing units. They are formed by private housing units and residential units located in collective housing units.

Type of Housing Unit

Permanent Private Househing Unit

A housing unit is considered permanent and private when, on the date of reference, it was being used as a home for one, two, or, at most, five families or five persons not related by consanguinity and/or domestic dependence and which was built with the exclusive purpose of being a place of residence.

Age

The results refer to the age in complete years on the date of reference of the Count. The question about age consisted of two items: one requesting the day, month and year of birth and the other, the presumed age for persons who did not know their own date of birth.

Relationship with the Household head

Household head - Person (man or woman) who is responsible for the household;

Spouse- Person (man or woman) who cohabits with the Household head;

Child (a) - Including adopted or foster child;

Other relative - Nephew/niece, uncle, cousin, father, mother, even when related to the spouse;

Non-paying unrelated resident - A person who is not is not a relative, roomer, domestic worker or relative of the domestic worker, but lives in the housing unit without paying for it;

Roommer - An unrelated person who pays to have the housing unit as their place of residence;

Domestic worker - A person who performs paid domestic services to the household members;

Relative of the domestic worker - A person who is a relative of the domestic worker and who does not performed paid domestic services to the household members; and

Individual in a collective housing unit - A person who lives alone in a collective housing unit.

Migration

A migrant is a person who lives in the household, aged four or over, born before Sep 01, 1991 and who, on this date, was not living in the housing unit where the interview was conducted.

The cut-off at Sept 01, 1991, as for information collection, is a function of the 1991 Population Census date of reference, what allows the evaluation of the migration movement in this period of 5 years.

Years of schooling

The classification by years of schooling is obtained according to the last grade, of the highest regular level, successfully completed by persons who were attending or had attended school. Each completed grade corresponds to a year of schooling.

School attendance

The investigation of school attendance encompasses all the persons aged 4 (four) years and over.

A person attending school is the one who, on the date of reference, was taking a regular course for the completion of a level in the American Education System (elementary school, high school, higher education or master's/doctor's courses).

This category also includes persons who, on the date of reference, were taking pre-school, literacy courses or Vestibular (university entrance test in Brazil) preparatory courses.

As for condensed courses of elementary and secondary education, a person was attending school when, on the date of reference, they were enrolled in a teaching establishment officially authorized to provide these types of courses, adopting a system of consecutive grades or not.

In the Population Count, a person is NOT attending school when:

  • they are attending an extension or professional course which does not contribute to the completion of a school level in the country, such as: languages, typing, computer science, courses by mail, etc.;
  • they were attending classes given on radio or television shows in order to take a condensed test for elementary or secondary level.
