Consumer Expenditure Survey 2008-2009

Per Capita Household Food Acquisition: Brazil and Major Regions

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF) 2008-2009 was aimed at providing information on the composition of household expenditure, based on the investigation of consumption habits, expense allocation and income distribution, according to the characteristics of households and people. POF also investigated self-perception of quality of life and characteristics of the nutritional profile of the Brazilian population.

Still releasing the survey information, IBGE presents results related to the quantity of food items and beverages acquired by families for consumption in the household, by different geographic levels, income groups and form of acquisition. These statistics offer the public sector invaluable subsidies to develop policies of food and nutritional security, health, housing, among other areas, and share with the private sector knowledge on the consumer profile and on the demand for goods and services, which are crucial in the formulation of investment strategies. The publication also presents concepts and definitions of the variables investigated by the survey, procedures used in information collection and treatment, as well as the description of the methodological model to calculate estimates of quantities acquired per capita.

The CD-ROM that accompanies the publication presents the information of the printed volume, and as a complement, contains tables produced for other geographic levels, coefficients of variation associated with the estimates presented in result tables released in this publication, besides other selected tables. This CD-ROM also comprises the collection instruments used in POF 2008-2009.

This set of information is available on IBGE website, where micro data of the survey may be found to make database search easier according to diverse perspectives.
