Consumer Expenditure Survey 2008 - 2009

Expenditure, Income and Life Conditions

With the release of this publication, IBGE starts disseminating results of the Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF) 2008-2009, which, only six years after the previous edition, was conducted due to a partnership with the World Bank, through the program Human Development Technical Assistance Loan – HD TAL, and an accord with the Ministry of Health. Being of fundamental importance to reduce the time between editions of a survey with such level of coverage, the resources and technical support applied led to the obtention of material and technical input and employed in this edition. They also allowed the elaboration of studies and tests aimed at the improvement and future implementation of continuous POFs.

The results released refer to expenses, income and appreciation/depreciation of family property – basic aspects for the analysis of household budgets – and some factors related to the subjective evaluation of life conditions, which are commented and presented for different geographic levels, including, in some approaches, comparisons with previous surveys. Information about Brazil encompasses urban and rural areas. Overall results are presented for Major Regions and Federation Units.

The publication also includes a view of survey objects and of the methodology applied, with emphasis on the main concepts and definitions, sampling aspects, collection devices and procedures and treatment of information. The CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication reproduces the printed volume and contains variation coefficients associated to all the estimates, for a given selection of result tables in this publication, tables produced for other geographic levels, as well as collecting devices used in POF 2008-2009.
