Consumer Expenditure Survey 2002 - 2003

Profile of Expenditures in Brazil - selected indicators

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (POF) 2002-2003 has the objective of providing information about the composition of household budgets, through the research of consumer habits, allocation of expenditures and distribution of income, according to characteristics of households and persons. The POF also investigated the self-perception of life conditions by the Brazilian population.

With the publication of the survey results, IBGE offers one more perspective of study of the wide potential of its database, including, in this publication, analyses about expenditures and income according to characteristics of the reference person in the family, such as: age, education, class of worker, sex, color or race, religion, among other aspects.

Commentaries about expenditures are presented in order to identify, in the variables associated to the reference person, explanatory factors of the great diversity of expenditures observed in the Country, in relation to costs as well as in relation to distribution. The subject of inequality is also approached, through the analysis of expenditures, in the comparison between the extreme classes of distribution of income. Complementary to this study are the analyses of several aspects of the insertion of the reference person in the labor market, besides the habits of food acquisition in the household according to the composition of family arrangements. Also, considerations about the acquisition of health products or services appear in the present publication in a more detailed way than in previous editions. Concepts and definitions of the investigated variables, the procedures used in the data collection, as well as a description of the methodology related to the analyses presented, are also available.

The results now published, which are also available in the CD-ROM attached to the publication, contribute to an integrated comprehension of several aspects which form the socioeconomic conditions of the Brazilian families.
