Summary of Social Indicators 2008:
An analysis of the Brazilian population life conditions
This publication presents indicators about the Brazilian social scenario, encompassing information about demographic aspects, education, labor and income, households, families and specific population groups – children, teenagers and youngsters, women and elderly persons – among other topics, and also brief commentaries which highlight some of the main features observed in different geographic and population strata.
The indicators are presented as tables and graphs for Brazil, its Major Regions and Federative Units and, in some cases, also for its Metropolitan Areas. They are mainly based on the results of the National Household Sample Survey, in which it is important to highlight, for selected indicators, international comparisons with countries such as Russia, India, China and South Africa which, together with Brazil, form the “BRICS” group, of potentially promising economies
The publication also presents a glossary with relevant terms and concepts to the understanding of the results.
All the information is also available in a CD-ROM included in the publication and on the IBGE web site.
The systematization of these indicators is in accordance with international recommendations and contributes to the understanding of changes in the demographic, social and economic profile of the country, making it possible to monitor social policies and the dissemination of relevant information to the Brazilian society.
