As a sequence to the thematic release of the Demographic Census 2000 sample results, which encompass Overall Characteristics of the Population, Migration and Moving, Education, Labor and Income, Marriage and Fertility Rates and Households, IBGE presents, in this volume, selected indicators which reflect the educational profile of the population and the main aspects of the democratization of education in Brazil, with figures for the country and its Major Regions.

The publication presents information about literacy, day-care and school attendance, years of schooling and level of schooling, by color or race, age group, location of the household and teaching levels, focusing on the proportion of the population with a degree. The results include analytical comments by specialists from the Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research – INEP, methodological notes and concepts and definitions applied. The CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication contains, besides the information in the printed volume, data for mesoregions, micro regions, Federative Units and municipalities, and the complete table plan which is the aim of the volume Demographic Census 2000: first sample results.

The results are estimates obtained by the expansion of the sample of 5 304 711 households and 20 274 412 persons, selected from all over the national territory, and summarize the main aspects of the social process of education – possibility of access, permanence in school and effectiveness of the educational system.
