Access to Internet and possession of mobile telephone for personal use

In 2005, the National Household sample Survey investigated as a supplementary topic, access to Internet and possession of mobile telephone for personal use, as a result of a partnership established between IBGE and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee - CGI.br, with the objective of expanding knowledge about the use of information and communication technology in the country, not only aiming at the construction of indicators for the use at national level but also at the international comparison of statistics concerning information society. In order to achieve the expected results in the survey were considered key-indicators of information and communication technology approved by the World Summit on the Information Society – WSIS.

This publication presents the main results of this survey. It characterizes persons who used the Internet in the country due to location, objective and frequency of access and type of web connection in the household; it also presents a profile of persons who did not have a mobile telephone for personal use by sex, age, level of schooling, average household income per capita, status as student and position in the occupation, besides showing differences among persons employed in terms of their participation in the job market.

The publication includes the survey sample plan, clarification about key-indicators used for the sake of international comparability of data on the topic, as well as terms and concepts considered essential to the understanding of results. The CD-ROM which comes enclosed the publication contains, besides information on the printed volume, coefficients associated to estimates presented in the table of results.

The survey consists of an important source of statistics in the use of information and communication technology, and help in the planning of national public policies aimed at the country’s technological development.
