Monthly Employment Survey
It produces monthly indicators about labor force which allow the evaluation of middle and long-term fluctuations and trends of the labor market in the covered areas, being a fast indicator of the effects of the economic conjuncture upon the market, besides providing other important data for the socio-economical planning of the Country. It includes, for example, information related to activity conditions, employment conditions, nominal and real income, classes of workers, possession of a formal contract in the labor market, having households as collection units.
The survey started in 1980, being subject to a complete review in 1982 and two partial reviews in 1988 and in 1993, when only adjustments relative to the sampling plan were made. In 2001, it underwent a methodology review aimed at increasing the level of detail of labor characteristics and forms of classes of workers in the productive market, updating its thematic coverage and adapting it to recent international patterns recommended by the International Labour Organization - ILO.
The main methodological changes introduced in this revision refer to the implementation of conceptual changes in the topic labor and to a greater coverage of the research, in order to obtain a better understanding of the employed population and the population searching for work. The search for work can include: making contact with employees, taking entrance tests, applying for entrance tests, consulting employment agencies, labor unions, etc. Changes in the data collection procedures and tools, especially the use of electronic data collection, as well as changes in the process of expansion of the sample have also been introduced. The revison became possible with a more profound study of the research and the aggregation of some aditional aspects, allowing investigations about specific topics, which comprise demographic, social and economic characteristics of the labor market.
