Monthly Survey of Industry - Physical Production - Special Indices by Export Capacity

Methodological Notes

In order to rate the industrial sectors according to the degree of openness to exportation, a basic index was created and the products of the Monthly Industrial Survey – Physical Production (PIM-PF) classified according to this typology. The coefficient of exportation relates the value of exports as a proportion of the revenue of the industrial companies. For this purpose, it was necessary to synchronize the information from the Annual Industrial Survey (PIA-Empresa) with the exports data from the Study Center of Foreign Trade Foundation - Funcex. The aggregation of the industrial activities was then obtained by decreasingly arranging the coefficients of exportation, based on the 3-digit group of the National Classification of Economic Activities - CNAE. In order to preserve the statistical confidentiality, some groups had to be aggregated, resulting in the analysis of 95 industrial sectors.

Starting with this basic indicator and taking into reference its value for the overall industry, four categories were defined (high, medium-high, medium-low and low). The methodology used for the definition of these categories took into account the distance of each group in relation to the average of the overall industry. Distance in this case meaning the differences expressed in units of standard deviation. As a result, the following classification was obtained::

  • High (A): distance higher than 0.5 STD;
  • Medium-High (MA): distance between 0.0 and 0.5 STD (exclusive);
  • Medium-Low (MB): distance between -0.5 and 0.0 STD (exclusive);
  • Low (B): distance lower than -0.5 STD.

It is important to highlight that 2004 was used as the reference year for the construction of the categories, in order to create the special index with the PIM-PF data.

The special indicator will be released monthly – monthly fixed-base, monthly, accumulated in the year and accumulated in the last 12 months. In this case, the four categories were aggregated into two:

  • Sectors with High Intensity of Exportation: coefficient of exportation above the national average (20.4%), encompassing the groups High and Medium-High.
  • Sectors with Low Intensity of Exportation: coefficient of exportation below the national average (20.4%), encompassing the groups Medium-Low and Low.
  • The attached Chart shows the industrial products in the categories in which they were classified. The products from the category of high intensity of exportation added up to 36.6% of the weighting, while the group of the low intensity of exportation added up to 63.4%.
