Physical Production- Brazil - Special Indicators by Expenditure on Electric Energy

Technical Notes

  • In order to provide one more instrument for the performance analysis of the Brazilian industry, series of indexes of industrial physical production were created by expenditure on electrical energy. Started in January 2002, the indexes will be updated monthly, aggregating the 830 products of the Monthly Industrial Survey - Physical Production – Brazil in a new way.

  • In regard to the expenditure on electrical energy, the PIM-PF products were classified into three levels: high, medium and low intensity. This typology considered the results of the certainty stratum of the Annual Industrial Survey - PIA of 1998, 1999 and 2000, composed of the industrial companies with 30 or more employed persons that answered to the question: how much electrical energy they acquired.

  • By analyzing the data from the companies – classified in PIA according to the prevailing activity sector at the three-digit level of the National Classification of Economic Activities -, cuts were established based on the result obtained for the average of the overall industry as well as on the coefficient of expenditure on electricity by sector - defined as the ratio between the value of acquisition of electrical energy and the value of industrial transformation.

  • Considering that the average of the overall industry expressed a coefficient of 3.5% between 1998 and 2000, those products associated with the industrial sectors with coefficient above 3.9% were classified as of high intensity tThe products from sectors with coefficient between 2.0% and 3.9% were classified as of medium intensity. And the products associated with industrial sectors with coefficient lower than 2.0% were defined as of low intensity.

  • The procedure for the creation of the quantum indexes is the same as that described under "Methodological Notes" Monthly Industrial Survey, Physical Production, Brazil.

  • The following indexes are released: Monthly, Accumulated, Accumulated in 12 Months and Monthly Fixed Base. The remaining indexes can be obtained by the user from the latter.

  • In addition to the results for the period of the series of the new PIM-PF - from January 2002 onwards -, indexes were also calculated for the period 1991-2003, related to the old series of the same survey. The chaining of the two series followed the same procedure adopted for chaining the results by activity and category of use. The chaining procedure used the relation between the indexes of January 2002 in both series as a link .

  • More detailed information about the procedures used can be obtained in the Coordination of Industry (COIND) – República do Chile Avenue, 500 4th floor, Centro, 20031-170, Rio de Janeiro - RJ, phone (+55 21) 2142-4514 or (+55 21)2142-0067.
