Industry - Physical Production - Agriculture Industry

Methodological Notes

  • With this publication, IBGE’s Coordination of Industry carries on with the dissemination of the new series of monthly agriculture business indexes, elaborated according to the revised Monthly Survey of Physical Production (PIM-PF), and with the updating of other relevant indicators about the short-term evolution of industry. These are national-coverage indexes normally released at the end of each semester.

  • In order to define agriculture industry, the reference adopted was the analysis developed in the 2001 edition of the Annual Survey of Enterprises (PIA Enterprise), which listed all the activities in the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) as part of restricted agriculture industry, that is, sectors which, primarily, either supply agriculture directly or are responsible for the first industrial manufacturing step of the goods which result from activities primary sector activities. Considering these activities, the group of products selected in PIM-PF was classified into the usual categories: Agriculture Total, Livestock Total, Insecticides, Herbicides and Other Pesticides for Use in Agriculture; with the inclusion of Wood Splitting.

  • Agriculture industry presents several hierarchical levels, as seen below:/p>

  • Agriculture Total

  • Industrial Products from Agriculture (sugarcane; pulp; tobacco; soybeans; oranges; wheat; rice; corn; and others): except for pulp, all the categories were present in previous editions of the survey conducted before the current reformulation;

  • Industrial Products Used in Agriculture (Manure and Fertilizers; and Machinery and Equipment);

    Livestock Total

    Industrial Products from Livestock (Poultry, Cattle, Hogs and Pigs and Other Livestock; Milk; Tanned Leather and Hides and Related Products);

    Industrial Products Used in Livestock (Animal Food, Vitamin Supplements or Related Products; and Veterinary Products, Dosed)

    Insecticides, Herbicides and Other Pesticides for Use in Agriculture

    Wood Splitting

  • The linking of the new agriculture industry series followed the same pattern as that of the previously released series, and it has generated results since January 1991, including those for new categories (pulp and wood splitting). On the other hand, for the categories corn; other industrial products from agriculture; tanned leather and hides; and insecticides, herbicides and other pesticides for use in agriculture, the linking process was not satisfactory, for that reason all the series start in January 2002.

  • The indexes presented in this document are subject to correction of primary data by survey informants. The system adopted for correction consists of the release, together with the results of each December in the year (n), of the “Monthly Fixed-Base Index” of year n-1, which will be definitive from now on.
