Gross Domestic Product of Municipalities
IBGE, in partnership with State Statistical Organizations, State Government Departments and the Superintendency of Zona Franca de Manaus - SUFRAMA, has been developing the project Regional Accounts of Brazil, with the publication of results about the evolution of the Gross Domestic Product - GDP of each Federative Unit, thus leading to the knowledge of the competitive capacity of state economies and the composition by region and sectors of the national GDP.
With the consolidation of this partnership, formalized in May 1996, and the increasing demand for information at municipal level, it has become important for IBGE to create the technical conditions to expand this project, with the elaboration of GDP estimates for Municipalities, whose results, now published, are compatible with the methodologies of the Regional Accounts and the Brazilian National Accounts.
This publication presents the results of value added, at current prices, of Agriculture, Industry and Services, as well as GDP, at current prices and per capita, relative to the period from 1999 to 2003, besides the selected tables, referring to 2003, for all the Brazilian municipalities. The analysis of the results, illustrated by graphs and maps, highlights some economic aspects of national and regional coverage.
The publication also includes annexes with the Gini Index by economic activity, by federative units and major regions for 2003, a list of the municipalities which form the metropolitan areas, as well as a glossary with relevant concepts and terms.
The methodology used in the elaboration of the estimates of the GDP of the municipalities is in accordance with the international recommendations expressed by the United Nations - ONU, World Bank, Comission of European Communities - EUROSTAT, International Monetary Fund - FMI and Organization for Cooperation and Economical Development - OECD, included in the manual System of National Accounts 1993.
The CD-ROM enclosed with the publication contains, besides the information in the printed volume, data base by municipality and by year.
