Profile of Brazilian Municipalities – 2009
With this publication, IBGE releases the results of the Survey of Basic Municipal Information conducted in 2009 in city halls of the 5,565 Brazilian municipalities. The results presently selected are grouped by classes of population size, Major Regions and Federation Units. They comprise all themes addressed by the survey since 1999, besides some unpublished ones, directed towards permanent updating and enlarging the set of variables investigated over the years.
This edition is organized in 11 chapters that highlight the main aspects of municipal management and structure, based on: administrative structure, culture, sports, housing, transport, health, safety, gender policy, environment, and human rights. The constant effort to update survey themes has renewed the interest from different agents and organizations to obtain helpful information for effective sector policies. This is done by understanding the behavior such phenomena have displayed on a local scale.
The publication comprises technical notes on the survey and a glossary with the concepts considered essential for result comprehension. The enclosed CD-ROM contains the information presented in the printed volume, as well as the complete survey database.
This set of information, also available at IBGE website, reflects the different realities of the Country and makes it possible to identify the shortcomings of Brazilian municipalities. It thus contributes to the democratization of public administration, by means of formulation and improvement of policies suitable for specific issues of its populations.
