Tourism Economics – a Macroeconomic Perspective 2000-2005
Tourism has been growing substantially in the last years as a social and economic phenomenon. As a consequence the traditional descriptions of this activity, based mainly in the social and cultural aspects of the travelers, have been complemented by a perspective of economic characteristic willing to identify and quantify the contributions generated by tourism to the economy of the countries.
In its first study of the topic, IBGE released the study Tourism Economics: characteristic activities of tourism 2003. This publication had the technical cooperation of the Ministry of Tourism and the Brazilian Institute of Tourism – EMBRATUR. It presented statistics related to the production (supply) of goods and services, expenditures (demand) of families, and characteristics of employed persons (employment) of this segment, based on the results of the economic and household surveys regularly produced by the Institution.
The study now published, resulting from the same partnerships, presents the main macroeconomic indicators of the characteristic activities of tourism, based on data compiled from the System of National Accounts, representing, therefore, an important progress in the contextualization of the economic dimension of tourism in Brazil.
The publication presents the conceptualization of tourism, highlighting the relevance of its analysis and evaluation as an economic and social phenomenon; methodological aspects related to the definition and classification of the economic activities and products which constitute it according to the criteria of the World Tourism Organization – OMT, and its correspondence with the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE 1.0; considerations about the articulation with the System of National Accounts; and analyses of the structure of the characteristic activities of tourism in 2005 and of the evolution of the main macroeconomic indicators in the period 2000-2005. It also includes a glossary with the concepts considered relevant for the understanding of the results, besides annexes which detail the classifications of specific and characteristic products of tourism.
This information is also available in the CD-ROM enclosed with the publication and in the website of IBGE in the Internet.
With this study, based on the System of National Accounts, IBGE underlines the segment of tourism as a remarkable and relevant economic activity and contributes for the elaboration of an integrated system of statistics directed to the construction of a Satellite Account of Tourism, providing therefore an improvement of the analyses and study of this segment.
