Statistics of Entrepreneurship 2008

Statistics of Entrepreneurship 2008

Entrepreneurship is believed to be critical for economic growth, productivity, innovation and employment. In the last years, governments in developed and developing countries have considered this theme in their agendas. However, there are not many comparable statistical indicators available for the matter.

IBGE makes available its first study on entrepreneurship, conducted in partnership with the Endeavor Brazil Institute. The statistics come from the Central Register of Enterprises – CEMPRE – and IBGE’s annual economic surveys about industry, civil construction, trade and services. They include information about the enterprise sector formally established in the context of the Brazilian economy of 2008.

The publication presents the methodological procedures, with a focus on the theoretical framework and notes about databases. The analysis of the results especially considers high-growth enterprises (i.e. those with an average increase of the salaried employed persons equal or greater than 20% per year for a period of three years). It is structured in three parts: the first one provides an overview of the phenomenon in Brazil, with emphasis on the size of enterprises and their mobility in the period; the second one presents intra- and inter-sectorial rates, as well as rates concerning employed persons, salaries and other remuneration, added value, productivity and other aspects based on the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE 2.0 -; the last part explores the results by Major Region and Federation Unit. At the end of the document, there is a glossary with relevant terms and concepts. A CD-ROM reproduces the printed volume.

All this information contributes to the debate about the dimensions and importance of entrepreneurship in the country, a theme that has grown in importance nationally and internationally.
