Census of Agriculture 2006

Preliminary Results

IBGE conducted, in 2007, a census operation encompassing the Census of Agriculture, Population Count 2007 and the National Register of Addresses for Statistical Purposes, with the objective of updating population estimates and information about the economic activities conducted in the country by members of society and agricultural companies.

As a result of this type of cooperative operation, this publication presents preliminary results for the Census of Agriculture 2006, which may still be changed at the occasion of the final release. This edition of the survey was characterized by technological innovation introduced in field operations, with the substitution of paper questionnaires for electronic questionnaires developed in a hand-held computer, a Personal Digital Assistant – PDA. Another singular aspect of this Census of Agriculture was technological refinement, mainly related to the introduction of new concepts, in order to encompass the transformations occurred in agricultural activities and in the rural area since the last edition of the survey.

The results refer to aspects such as the number and total area of agricultural establishments, use of land, existing tractors, employed persons, total figures for livestock and animal production for Brazil, its Major Regions and Federative Units.

The publication, which is also available on the IBGE website, contains technical notes about the survey and concepts needed to understand the results released. The CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication presents, besides the information in the printed volume, data for meso-regions, micro-regions and municipalities according to selected characteristics, providing, this way, a profile of the Brazilian agricultural sector.

Results of the Census of Agriculture 2006, similarly to those released before, are in accordance with the recommendations and basic concepts of FAO - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, generating internationally comparable results.
