Social, Demographic and Economic Information

Social and Demographic Statistics

Among the data sources in this area, can be highlighted some surveys which are based on the collecting of data from households. The Demographic Census, which is done every ten years, consists of the core of social demographic statistics. In the middle of a decade, between two editions of the Census, there is the Population Count, a census operation intended to improve the annual population estimates. The National Household Sample Survey – PNAD, which is based on samples, investigates, every year, information on housing, income and labor, together with information related to demography and education. As one more source of information about the labor market, there is the Survey of Urban Informal Economy, which is released every five years. The monthly monitoring is done through the Monthly Employment Survey – PME. The Consumer Expenditure Survey - POF, which is also released every five years, brings information about the structure of income and expenditure of families. In terms of demographic information there are also the surveys based on administrative registers, such as the Civil Register, the Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance and the National Survey of Public Sanitation.

Agriculture Statistics

It is based on the Census of Agriculture, which investigates the agrarian organization (ownership and use of land), the profile of workers and the technological level of the production process, among other relevant themes in agricultural establishments. The highlights for the monitoring of the sector are the Municipal Agricultural Survey and the Municipal Livestock Survey.

Economic Statistics

It brings information about the main sectors of economy: trade, industry, construction and services, using sample surveys of establishments in each sector. The Annual Survey of Trade, the Annual Survey of Industry, the Annual of Construction and the Annual of Services are examples of the most relevant works in this area. It is worth mentioning that the monitoring of economy aspects is possible due to the group of monthly surveys of trade, industry and agriculture.

Price Indexes

Being continuously and systematically produced, the consumer price indexes allow the monthly monitoring of the prices of the main products and services used by the population. This area encompasses the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) and the Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), based on the consumption basket of families with the highest income. Besides these, through the National System of Costs Survey and Indexes of Construction, it is possible to monitor the evolution of prices, of manpower and of the material in the sector.

System of National Accounts

It offers an overall view of the economy and describes the main phenomena which constitute the economy: production, consumption, accumulation and wealth, providing a simple and understandable, yet complete, representation of this group of phenomena and their interrelations. The System of National Accounts of IBGE follows the most recent recommendation of the United Nations contained in the Manual of National Accounts – 1993 – SNA, including the calculation of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the Input-Product Matrix.
