Having joined the IBGE in 1942, Geiger was one of the major researchers of the first generation of the National Council of Geography (CNG). Then he stood out as one of the references of the Brazilian and IBGE´s geography, where he worked for more than 40 years. Marcio Pochmann, President of the IBGE, highlights that “the centenary of Pedro Pinchas Geiger’s birth is an opportunity for celebration and recollection. Having hit this milestone, we can pay a tribute to the life, career and legacy of an IBGEan who influenced generations of researchers within and outside the IBGE. It is also a moment to revisit his contribution to the Brazilian geography, especially in the areas of Urban and Regional Geography, highlighting the relevance of his intellectual production.”

His original work Evolução da Rêde Urbana Brasileira was published by the former Brazilian Research Center and later by the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP). To produce the facsimile edition, the IBGE was supported both by the author and INEP, who promptly authorized the project.
