The general objective of the II National Meeting of Producers and Users
of Social, Economic and Territorial Information is to start the revision,
updating and expansion of the General Plan of Statistical and Geographical
Information - PGIEG, based on the efforts and having the assistance of
producers and users of information, including governmental institutions,
survey institutions, non-governmental organizations, scientific associations,
as well as technicians and researchers interested in the production, dissemination
and use of all information necessary to the knowledge of the reality of
the country and to the exercise of citizenship. In order to reach this
ambitious objective, the institution tried to subdivide its activities
according to the several specific objectives listed below.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- To elaborate a broad, precise and updated diagnosis of the state
of the art of the production of information in the sphere of public
services in Brazil
- To find gaps, identify opportunities for improvement, and make explicit
the demand for new information with reference to the public services
in Brazil.
- To provide opportunities for the broad participation of users in
the formulation of plans of statistical and geographical information
in the country.
- To offer a forum for the articulation of institutions which produce
information aiming at the ready fulfillment of demands in existence
or to be formed.
- To reinforce the role of IBGE as the coordinator of the production
of statistical and geographic information in the Brazilian government
- To debate current topics relative to the financing and infra structure
for the production of information and its use in government services
and in benefit of the civil society.
- To identify opportunities for the conceptual and methodological integration
of sources of information of certain relevant topics for debates at
national level
- To promote broad participation of IBGE servants in the event, stimulating
their technical-professional development, expanding their views on the
institution activities, on institutional relations, and reinforcing
their focus on the reply to the demands of society.
- To provide the formation of networks of servants enabling the contact
with the main foreign interlocutors, both producers and users, in the
respective fields of activity. The meeting is subdivided into three
sections: the V National Conference of Statistics - CONFEST, the IV
National Conference of Geography and Cartography - CONFEGE and the International
Seminar of Production and Dissemination of Geographical and Statistical
Information - SIEG.

These events will allow IBGE and the other producers of information in
the Brazilian public sphere to present to users the state of the art of
production and its prospects of advance, to hear from the users their
experience in relation to weaknesses, gaps, and new demands for the production
of information. Besides, it will promote more articulation, integration
and cooperation in the production and dissemination of information in
different fields, as well as expand the possibility to use of the information
produced.
It is worth mentioning that the II Meeting does not have a deliberative
character. This is the starting point of the restructuring and elaboration
of the PGIEG, which is going to continue in the subsequent months and
with an estimated date of conclusion of this first version for April 30,
2007. The PGIEG document will be elaborated by commissions of specialists
to be formed under the leadership of IBGE and other institutions promoting
the II Meeting. The first version of the document will be made available
for public consultation on the Internet on the date listed above. The
period for public consultation is expected to be from May 1 to August
31, 2007. After this step, the commissions elaborating the document will
examine the suggestions resulting from it and will finish the elaboration
of the final product, having already incorporated changes due to this
public interference, being then proposed the release of PGIEG until November
15, 2007.
